A scene from Irish Destiny, a 1926 film made in Ireland. It was directed by George Dewhurst and written by Isaac Eppel to mark the tenth anniversary of the 1916 Rising.
Why not take a motorcycle trip through Dublin in 1926… If you pause/stop the video at 35 seconds, you’ll see the GPO is still a ruin, with empty windows… and no roof… after the 1916 Rising! It wasn’t rebuild until 1929.
The film was considered lost for many years. In 1991 a single surviving nitrate print was located by the Irish Film Institute in the United States’ Library of Congress.
The institute’s archive had the film transferred to safety stock and restored. It then commissioned Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin to write a new score for the film.
